Computer viruses are software programs deliberately designed to interfere with computer operation, record, corrupt, or delete data, or spread themselves to other computers and throughout the Internet, often slowing things down and causing other problems in the process. Spyware and other unwanted software can invade your privacy, bombard you with pop-up windows, slow down your computer, and even make your computer crash. Here are several tools you can use to help protect your computer against spyware and other unwanted software.
Windows Defender (Windows XP/Vista Only) —
If you are running Windows XP or Vista we would highly recommend Windows Defender. It is a free download for users of Windows XP and Vista.
AVG Free (Windows 2000, XP, and Vista) —
If you are running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, AVG has a free Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware software package available on their website.
If you are looking for a quick way to check your PC for viruses or spyware, you can use the web browser based OneCare scanner that Microsoft has made available.
Windows Live OneCare (Windows 2000, XP, and Vista) —
If you are running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, Microsoft, has a free online scanner to check your PC for viruses and spyware.
